Petition Posted by on September 20, 2009, 03:20 PM
PLEASE ADD YOUR "AMEN" TO THE PETITION BELOW!
A PRAYER TO ALMIGHTY GOD, and A PETITION TO MAYOR OF TEHACHAPI, CALIFORNIA, LINDA VERNON, and COUNCILMEMBERS BECKHAM, GRIMES, REED AND SMITH: Dear Mayor and Councilmembers: We the undersigned, respectfully petition you to defend religious freedom by allowing visiting pastors of all diverse faiths and denominations, to pray aloud publicly according to the dictates of their own conscience, at or before city council meetings, even if they dare to pray aloud publicly "in Jesus name" or invoke their own specific deity. Please do not cave-in to atheist intimidation by the enemies of religious liberty, including Americans United and the Freedom From Religion Foundation, who are threatening to sue to silence all prayers. Please conform your decision to First Amendment precedent which allows Jesus prayers among other rotating diverse prayers, as already decided in the 7th Circuit (Hinrichs v. Bosma) and 11th Circuit (Pelphrey v. Cobb County) and by the Supreme Court of the United States in two decisions: Marsh v. Chambers and especially Lee v. Weisman. Jesus is not an illegal word, the Bible is not a banned book, and evangelistic speech is not a crime. Please simply adopt a policy similar to Tulsa City Council, and declare the prayers are private speech, not government speech, or allow the prayers to be said aloud during optionally attended time, just before the first government business is gaveled to order. Please allow pro-bono Christian lawyers, from the Alliance Defense Fund or others, to defend your pro-Jesus prayer policy in court. We pray to God you will stand with us by taking a courageous stand for liberty, in Jesus' name. Amen." Add your "Amen" by signing below, and WE WILL POST YOUR COMMENTS to the Mayor and Councilmembers of Tehachapi, California who face threat of lawsuit by FFRF to censor "Jesus" from public prayers. With all the problems that the school systems across the nation are facing, it seems to me that reasonable people would recognize that one of the biggest changes we've made is to block God out of our schools. Please think about it.

Dear Mayor Linda Vernon,
We Christians are not a second class citizens although that seems to be the popular orientation relating to public discourse in the present times.
Please stand firm and do not allow the enemies of the First Amendment of the Constitution to prevail as what you do in your town have repercussions in the rest of the country for good or for evil.

why should
the people complaining about the Bible have their way, go with the Christians. Jesus died for All, looked at what has happen after you all tooked Prayer out of school. When i was going to school back in fifty; and early sixty;s we didn;t have to have guards to keep us safe,
we had JESUS. Yours truly, Carolyn BUck

A First Amendment precedent which allows Jesus prayers among other rotating diverse prayers, has already been decided in the 7th Circuit (Hinrichs v. Bosma) and 11th Circuit (Pelphrey v. Jesus is not an illegal word, the Bible is not a banned book, and evangelistic speech is not a crime.
If you're going to do this, then what about all who utter His name as an exclamation of frustration or simply thank Him aloud for a provision - try enforcing that!

Thank you very much for all of your efforts in trying to prevent our country and beliefs from further falling into the amoral abyss.
God Bless you

The constitution states "freedom OF religion" not "freedom FROM religion" as an individual right of all citizens!

This has to stop. When our President allows the Muslims to have a religious gathering at the White house we should be allow a Christian gathering in our towns and cities, America is a Christian Country and most of us want it to stay that way. Jesus is the son of God and his name should be allowed in our "free" country.
Thank You
